Looking back at your preliminary task (the school magazine task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to a full product?
From making my prelim task magazine, I have learnt many things to improve upon whilst making my official music magazine. The masthead on my school magazine is simple, it is in a plain colour in a simple font with no effects on it. For my magazine, I have improved upon my photoshop techniques and have experimented with different font styles and colours in order to fit in with my house style. I have used drop shadows on the masthead as well as using alternating colours. I feel my masthead has greatly improved in the progression from the two magazines as my music magazine looks more professional and official; the font is more sophisticated and dominating whereas my school magazine masthead does not stand out in any way.
I greatly improved my photoshoot skills from my school to music magazine. Originally, my school magazine photo was landscape, meaning when it came to inserting the image into photoshop I had to crop it a lot and adjust the sizing which may have caused some slight change in the position and shape of the model I have used. I learnt from my mistake of doing this and when it came to taking my other photos, it was taken portrait which made the construction of my magazine a lot easier as it simply fit into place with little adjustment. However, when carrying out my photo shoot, I ended up having to do 2 takes. The photo's from my first photo shoot were out of focus and some a little blurry. I had not positioned my model correctly and he was not looking at the camera in some shots which I needed him to in order to make the reader feel inclusive. As a result of this, I conducted another photo shoot where I learnt from my mistakes and used the bad points of the images to improve upon in this shoot.
On both my school magazine and my music magazine I have used the same font on the masthead as I have throughout the whole copy on the front pages. This is to attempt to create a consistent house style however, on my music magazine I have a more complex font and found I had to increase the font size of this in order for it to be clearer and easy to read for my audience. On both my front covers, I have positioned my copy in similar places on each, this is to give more structure to the magazine but to also frame the model.
The structure and layout of both my contents pages are fairly similar. I have used various images on both however, I have learnt how to structure and write an editorial which I have included on my music magazine, in order to give it a more professional and personal touch. Instead of using the same font as on my front cover, I have used a more simple font on my contents pages in order for the reader to be able to see and navigate around the magazine clearly. As well as this, I have progressed in my contents page functions by including a visual and narrative tease as well as a feature article with a large image. I have used page numbers on both although on my music magazine I have progressed in my learning to make them stand out more as well as fitting them in with the name and theme of the magazine. I have included more pages and features on my music magazine to make the magazine interest the audience as there will be a wider range of variety for them to be interested in. On both contents pages, I have structured the layout using columns as this is a typical contents page convention however, I have become more aware of 'the rule of three' on my music magazine page to structure it better.
