Prelim Task

Preliminary Exercise

Using a digital camera and Photoshop I will produce the front page of a new school/college magazine featuring a photograph of a student in a medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead.

Additionally I must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate my grasp of DTP.

Below are the flat plans that I created for my school magazine:

This is the flat plan for my front cover. I have stuck to some aspects of my plan in my real prelim task however, I have changed the layout quite a lot. I have used the same title in both however in my actual magazine, I have used a simpler font and no slanted text. I have also changed my side bar and included much less detail as well as only having one central graphic on my prelim page. The theme of my front cover has also changed, instead of focusing on the 'party' season as I did in my plan, I focused on exam results as this is much more relevant to a school magazine. I have kept the same footer of my magazine with the same subject content however, I did not include an image to accompany this.

This is the flat plan for my school magazine contents page. On my real task, I have tried to stick to the plan as I have used pretty much the exact layout as this however, on my contents list, instead of having subheading's I have simply listed what is included in the magazine in page order.

Here is my school magazine front cover. I have used a main caption to interest the readers to persuade them to read the magazine. The use of the quiz standing out will catch the readers eye as it is interesting and fun for the reader and therefore gives them an insight to what it is in the magazine. The use of the colour black suggests a dark mysterious side to the magazine, suggesting that the magazine is not only interested in school activities whereas the white implies the serenity of the school. The caption of 'teacher's get personal' will intrigue the reader as it is 'gossip' which people will be interested in reading about.

I have blocked my contents page into columns to make it organised and easy for the reader to navigate around. I have used the same colour scheme as on my front page to create a constant house style theme. I have used simple captions to the photo's as it leaves the audience 'hanging' and wanting to read more on the articles.
